Soroptimists International " Ruby Award" 2010

Soroptimist International Ruby Award 2010 was given to Tamara Lynn Scott for her outstanding contributions to women through her not-for-profit, educational, Broadcast Cable Series!

SEGMENT 416 Soroptimists Awards

Capitola by the Sea hosted it's yearly awards banquet on the 100th year anniversary of the International Year of the Woman, and gave three local women awards. The " Ruby Award", once called the " Women Helping Women " Award, was given to Tamara Lynn Scott for her 10 years of self-producing a 4 times weekly, educational, not-for-profit, Broadcast Series that often features women both locally and around the world.

This broadcast is the major commentary of the evening, and features all three of the women awarded.

In addition to the Soroptimist Award, Certificates of Recognition were given from the House of Representatives, the Congress, and the Senate.

Royal Neighbors of America presents $3,000
to Boulder Creek woman to help continue a dream (Rock Island, IL)—

Tamara Lynn Scott, Boulder Creek, was awarded a check for $3,000 from Royal Neighbors of America as part of the organization’s Nation of NeighborsSM Program to help her continue to produce media that matters for not-profit cable broadcasts.

Ms. Scott has produced broadcasts, at her own expense, on such subjects as environmental dangers, healthy foods, and the elimination of hunger. The funds she received will help her continue the work of lifting humanity through educational outreach.

Focusing on its history of standing strong for women, Royal Neighbors has surpassed the $1 million mark assisting more than 800 families and individuals in reaching their goals and rebuilding their lives through its Nation of Neighbors Program. The program, which was launched in 2007, demonstrates the neighbor-helping-neighbor philosophy on which Royal Neighbors was founded in 1895.

Through the 2010 program, determined women of strength and courage are empowered with financial assistance to rise above challenging circumstances, achieve their full potential, and realize a sense of renewed personal growth. Each year, Royal Neighbors members and sales agents across the country are asked to nominate women they know who want to change their lives for the better. A panel reviews each nomination and determines the recipients and the monetary amounts awarded.

As a non-profit fraternal organization, Royal Neighbors of America exists for the benefit of its members. It offers insurance products to fulfill a variety of needs for growth, savings, and protection. Members also receive valuable member benefits and can participate in volunteer activities through the organization’s local chapters to make a difference in their communities. These filters only take seconds to clean opposed to up to 20 minutes for regular cartridges, saving water.

The filters use far less material than do regular cartridges, resulting in less petroleum based plastics being wasted.

The inner frame and core are lifetime items, replacing only the outer skin, which can last up to 3 years.

Dimension One Spa - Passive Rise Hot Water Feed - Dan's Handyman Service

is creating a test kitchen,
so to speak,
to create an energy self-reliant system of heating water using solar energy and a series of 5 water panels which have been located just below the position of the Dimension One Spa,
to allow passive rise of hot water into the spa and the cooler water returning to the hot water panels.

This is achieved by keeping the water in a loop system where no pumps or outside energy is needed to heat and move the water into the spa.

Temperatures are being controlled, currently, through a manual system of covering over the hot water panels during the hottest months, to prevent the water from overheating.

Dan Wilson, of Dan's Handyman Service, plumbed the heat rated, fire proof hose into the inlets and outlets of the Spa.

Generator Repair with Dan's Handyman Service

proceeds with getting water up to the mountain top
by reactivating a generator that had been sitting and as a result,
corroding due to unused gasoline which had condensated and rusted the interior.

Dan Wilson, of Dan's Handyman Service,
repaired the generator by cleaning out all the corrosion.

The generator was tied into pre-existing wiring to the well pump, and is now being used to pump water up the mountain and into the Dimension One Spa, along with a few extra 55 gallon water storage barrels which are used to replenish water lost to evaporation.

Large pieces of 4 by 12 lumber is being used to create a platform for the water barrels next to the hot tub, to allow gravity feed water into the spa.

Artists of Santa Cruz - Body Form Sculpture

is participating in the Broadcast Cable Series

by providing the casts of body forms
created by ceramic artist, Richard Smith,
who has finished with these plaster molds
and who is making them available for the
Temple to the Arts being created in the series.
From the Ground Up.

The forms are shown here laid out on recycled pieces of metal roofing, so none of the exterior paint being used to coat the molds goes to waste.

The Paint is recycled paint available from the local landfills, and is being used to stiffen up the molds, protect them from moisture, and will be getting several more applications of various colors to allow them a more appealing and protected surface.

They will be on-hand for the next concrete project, currently being planned to create a pad for the Dimension One Spa, so as not to have any cement wasted.

Once the molds have been filled with cement, they will be positioned about the gardens and roadway access as sculptural forms which can be embedded into retaining walls or as stand alone art.

Shown here is a form of the artist, Tamara Lynn Scott, which she painted in the fire tones of yellow, red, and white, to be utilized as mosaic in the fire circle currently underway.

Water on the Mountain Top - Dan Wilson

Water has returned to the mountain top with the help of Dan Wilson, shown here at the water's first run up into a Dimension One Arena Spa being featured in the series.

A Grundfos pump pushed the water up a 500 foot deep well, and with the help of a generator, successfully pushed water up another 200 feet of rise to the mountain top.

Dan Wilson laid in a patchwork of 1 inch PVC pipe which was tied into the previously existing buried pipeline to bring the water to the tub.

Stay tuned as the water will soon be circulating through solar heated hot water panels in a passive closed loop system that will allow the natural heat of the water to lift it into the tub, a system which requires no pumps.

conducting testing on a variety of Photovoltaic Panels in preparation for the hook up of Grundfos deep well pump capable of being run directly from Solar Panels, making it the choice pump for the series, and for remote water pumping applications.

The Grundfos control panel was opened to check for wiring sizing.

Tests were conducted to see if the pump could be run off the power generated by a normal automobile battery, which did not have adequate amps to keep the pump running.

There was not enough power being supplied from one 130 watt solar Panel to activate the pump.

Next up will be configuring 5 130 watt solar panels in the 48 volt Xantrex Inverter and 8 Deca Gel Cell batteries that comprise the main power system to determine if the main system is adequate to power the water pumping from a 500 foot deep well, up the mountain to a water holding tank, and then up to the building site and water holding tank which will then feed a hot tub, and radiant tube heated floor of the Octagonal cement slab foundation, as well as additional holding tanks for solar heated shower and bath.

Solar Water Heating Panels - Site Preparation

continues its preparation of the mountain top to receive a passive rising, closed loop system of solar water heating panels which are first being removed from the previous rack set up, which had been positioned facing south on the uppermost bank location, hanging precipitously and crowded too near the driveway.

Shown here is the collapsing rack, panels, and the body form sculpture with a view to the south , all to be moved.

The weathered wooden rack has been disassembled. The wood holding it for 15 years is now being moved over the fire circle where it will be utilized as evening tinder,cooking fuel, and light, to assist in the burning of the multitudinous scrap branches from trees and bushes being cleared where the new positioning of the Solar Panel Rack will be achieved, in a more roomy environment, below the anticipated location for the Dimension One Hot Tub.

Spring cleaning of the slope and the driveway interior radius below it, has made the slope now open for possible planting of lower to the ground, Pinot Noir vines, or Agave, or jade plants, heat resistent, and/or food producing.

Removing the debris has widened the driveway back to original form, and increased by 3 feet or more, usable driving surface.

Dan Wilson is being featured in the disassembly and reconstruction of the solar heated hot water panel racking, shown here in a western oriented view, with 3 foot by 8 foot glassed recycled solar water panels stacked to be re-utilized in a new rack and location.

Two individuals are needed to hold parts in place while screws are being attached.

Once the 4 sides were assembled and stood up, the Cabana was moved into place on a leveled site and placed on pressure treated wood.

The lower solid side panels were put into place, then the upper vented shutters, and then the door, prior to screwing the cabana onto the pressure treated base.

A ladder was then needed to drop the roof rafters into place, and the slats.

and mixed green salad,
crowned with the chocolate lover's cake,
for an afternoon dinner created in the outdoor kitchen of the series

This kitchen requires no electricity or propane, and can be fueled with the oak woods available on the lands.

Completion of the Marble Mosaic, Acid Stained concrete surface of a radiant tube heated and cooled Octagonal Slab which will serve the purpose of a pad for a temporary sort of housing, the Yurt, to be demonstrated set up on next.

Striking artwork combines with a selection of black and green granite pieces shaped into a starburst, sunburst energy pattern. Layout was accomplished by transferring a pattern laid out at the center of the mountain top, of collected related color pieces.

Excess cement was used to fill in the body form molds now standing upright and leaning against the racks which hold the hot water panels which will be re-mounted in a new racking system in an upcoming segment. These sculptural pieces will adorn the gardens.

Now that the theatre Earth Day airings of International EarthVision Films has successfully aired in Santa Cruz, California, and will continue to air every Saturday evening for the remainder of the year, upcoming segments 296 through 301 of the series " From the Ground Up " will be focusing on " Green Solutions " to keep our waterways clean, our earth non-toxic. "From the Ground Up" delves deeper than the earth on which we stand. Everything builds.

It's time for a sneak peak at upcoming segments currently underway for the series "From the Ground Up" - the creation of a Marble Mosaiced, Octagonal, Radiant Tube Heated and Cooled, Artwork, Foundation, Site of Future Water and Spa Temple, next to be used as a temporary Yurt Pad. These pieces of marble have all been collected and rescued from burial in our landfills.

Demonstrations will be shortly applying acid stains on the grey concrete, to create a painting in stone.

California Grey Bears 28:00 (U.S.A. Santa Cruz) Category - Environmental Sustainability CALIFORNIA GREY BEARS, INC. is an affirmative action, nonprofit, membership organization of "Seniors Helping Seniors" in a spirit of volunteerism unparalleled anywhere in Santa Cruz County. Grey Bears was started in 1973 by a couple of young people and some seniors who came together to share their excess produce. The purpose of Grey Bears is to supply seniors 55 and older with free, nutritious, and budget-stretching "Brown Bags" of groceries which come from donations that are picked up from local stores or farms, donated, or gleaned from the fields. Grey Bears' goal is to be as self-reliant as possible, and, as a result, we started a recycling program which contributes one third of the revenues necessary to make it possible to serve 2700 seniors throughout the County.

Mountain Top Tour of Building Site

The Broadcast Cable Series,
From the Ground Up
is anticipating a new upcoming round of
architectural concepts for the Mountain Top
Site on which an energy self-reliant,
environmentally Friendly, Prototype Home
is to be constructed.

The approach will encompass the larger form
of lands, showing approach at the base of the
mountain to site, where currently well house,
well, and Grundfos Pump Controls are
located.

This View of the Well House, and Wood Storage House, was taken from the secondary access drive, showing the back side of the small shed constructed from recycled materials. The Main access drive gate is seen on the right.

Two roadways rise up the mountain, the main access which leads to the mountain top,a rising, north directional driveway from which can be sighted an Artist Studio created from recycled materials towards the east perched at the 3rd terrace level, to a turn where a 1500 gallon above ground, green poly water tank is located near the western property line, which follows near the access road.

A second access drive, located at the base of the mountain saddle where the main access rises, leads easternly up to a landing site located in the middle of the lowest of the 5, 100 foot long terraces which rise up the south facing slope of the pyramidal shaped mountain top form.

Located here are recycled materials of Tile, Marble, Wood, Windows, which are being incorporated into several out structures being used for storage of thousands of recycled books being saved from destruction and landfills. These books will be moved up into the walls of the Prototype Home, once it is constructed.

Views of the Library Storage House can be seen from the base entrance gate to the lands through the forest of Oaks.

This location at the base of the pyramidal mountain, has been thought of as a possible site for creating a wood fired Kiln for ceramics, with easy load in and out capabilities, and supply of wood all around. Heat rising from the Kiln can be used to boost heat of water for the Recycled Hot Tub, currently moved from the mountain top where it stood on the current site of the Octagonal Cement Slab, Radiant Heated, Marble Mosaiced Floor/Foundation.

Recycled Hot Water Solar Panels - also moved from the mountain top site, will be utilized for the main source of heating the hot tub.

From this location, also, a series of steps is being formed in the center, leading upwards to the ascending terraces, much like the steps of the Mayan Pyramids, up to the Hot Tub and outdoor bathing areas.

Back to following the Main driveway, past the 1,500 gallon water tank, which will serve as a pumping station, utilizing another Grundfos Solar Pump and Controls, the roadway turns east as it ascends along the western facing ridgeline of the lands.

Sculptural Body Forms, currently being laid out on the mountain top to receive excess cement from the Octagonal pouring, will be placed along the entrance drive. may be utilized along the roadway.

A 30 foot radius landing site, located on the north side of the drive is being considered for placement of a composite or redwood decking which will host a gazebo type structure, or host a sample of portable housing, a Yurt, prior to being more permanently constructed. Spectacular views to the sheer drop off of the northern face of the mountain top can be enjoyed here, with magnificent sunsets.

Geologically, the north side of the mountain top is covered with tall Douglas Firs, and Redwoods, a ancient landslide 1000 years ago sharpened the drop, with mostly stable sandstone base core of the mountain remaining. The previous, Hud Awarded, Energy Efficient home which was lost to fire, had been constructed around 10 feet from the Northern Slope, being considered stable enough to allow such.

Views of the Original, Metal, 5000 gallon Water Tank and Generator Shed as seen when looking up from the Landing Site to the Mountain top. These Structures can be removed, replaced, or restructured.

Continuing along the drive, as it rises eastwards, another landing site on the south side of the roadway allows supplies to be dropped off for accessing the top two south facing garden terraces, around 10 foot wide and 100 feet or more long. Marble and wood is also stored here.

Native Plants of the area, filmed in previous segments, have been planted along the terraces, with the most notable successes among the sages, deer tolerant, and self- reliant.

Priority is being given to useful plants, herbs, and foods. Rosemary and Lavenders have also been thriving, and each year cuttings are planted which extend the farming of the same, lining the driveway with their beautiful blue and lavender blossoms, all self-reliant.

The original hot water panels face south just below where the Octagonal Slab is located. These may be moved to the topmost terrace to allow the artist creation of a composite deck that will be extending outwards from the Octagon on its southmost side, where cement pavers are not practical - allowing for the enjoyment of the spectacular southern and western views.

As the driveway enters the top of the mountain top site, an oak tree on the southeast corner, provides shade and a sitting area, or turnaround for small vehicles.

The eastern side of the mountain is currently planted with Rosemary, and of gentle enough slope to be considered for garage or structure, bermed into the mountain side.

Spectacular views are afforded in all directions on the mountain top.

The previous home's bedrooms and kitchen areas faced the eastern sunrise with balconies and large glass sliding doors that invited the outdoors in.

Marble of Sandstone and golds are being favored for the East

Viewing the mountain top from the driveway entrance, where currently recycled bricks and pavers line the northeastern corner, where a field tent/office is set up, along with a trampoline, currently serving as a water catch during the winter rains.

The center of the mountain top has been laid out with the black and green marble to be inserted into the Octagonal Cement Slab, colors of marble chosen for the heated slab where portable housing of a yurt will be next set up, to demonstrate portable housing and systems, later to be partially enclosed as a indoor/outdoor water and bathing area, where the hot tub and outdoor showers will be solar heated.

Marble of Green, Black, and White hues are being selected for the Octagon Slab.

The Northern Side of the Site is currently occupied with the Trampoline and Body Forms waiting to be cement filled.

The western part of the mountain top is currently being used to lay out the various patterns and colors of recycled marble , and the body form molds.

The West faces the glorious sunsets where all evening living is focused towards. Living Room and Fireplace in the original home faced to the West.

If potential lap pools of rainwater collection were constructed, the western placement would take advantage of solar heating panels which could be placed on the somewhat gentle slopes facing south and west to warm, and the general shift of activity and focus to follow the setting sun.

A small shelter for the generator which originally served as diesel power to pump the water from the well up to the rooftop holding tanks is located midway down the ridgeline on the west.

Looking back at the Octagonal Pad from the western point reveals several trees which are in the process of being trimmed and removed to open up the winter sun and view.

The Western Views of the site include the area where previous cement pads have been moved, for re-use and incorporation into the landscaping, rather than demolition and removal. This photo is taken from a position near the Octagonal Cement Slab, looking at the western point of the mountain top.

The West is the direction of activity for the evening of the day, predominated by spectacular sunsets, gathered round the evening fire.

Standing where the back of the previous home once stood, an energy efficient, HUD awarded energy efficient home, and looking out to the north, where the land sharply falls, surrounded in cooling stands of tall redwood and douglas fir, which help to block the winter, northern winds. Currently staged with a trampoline which is serving to collect waters, and additional body sculptural forms, waiting for overflow cements. Recycled, and reclaimed cement pavers, bricks, and other materials, such as marble, are being gathered to the mountain top, for consideration and inclusion on projects.

These images, taken from the flat topped crown of the mountain top,
show the open lighted airiness of the perch, and the most important element of the site, the out of doors, and the spectacular views in all directions.The majority of living space will be indoor/outdoor semi-enclosed living areas. On the mountain top, one rushes to be out of doors.

A camping tent has been set up to provide temporary shelter and office space.

Additional images will be taken and posted of land views coming up the current access road, and other areas of the lands not included above, to allow a more total concepting of the land usage and development. These images begin the first steps of envisioning a total concept for the land and its usages.

continues to prepare for the upcoming
cement pour for the Octagonal, passive solar
heated, radiant tube slab which will be
finished off in recycled pieces of black
marble and granite.

In anticipation of excess cement, body
formed molds have been painted and laid out
ready to receive. No cement will thusly be
wasted.

All excess pieces of rebar and wire will be inset into the forms when being poured.
Metal scraps from mattresses, bedframes, and other recycled metals are being incorporated into the sculptures.
In addition, recycled styrofoam bits may be added into the cement mixture to lighten the forms.
These sculptural forms were created in the sister series,
"Artists of Santa Cruz", and will take their places in the gardens surrounding,
and may be embedded in walls, frescos,
and other cement and stone architectural details.

Marble Mosaics and Body Sculpture

Recycled Marble
is being utilized in the Marble Mosaic laid out for incorporation into the Passive Solar Heated, Radiant Tube Cement Slab being scheduled for pouring and creation on the next segment filming for the series.

Black marble was selected out of a large collection of pieces because of its dark reflective qualities, and ability to retain heat.

While the cement pour is occurring, sculptural forms will also be created with the excess cement. These forms were created in earlier segments with the Artists of Santa Cruz series, showing plaster casting and creation of ceramic artwork.

The casts were painted to assist with holding their shape, and for surface prep to receive the cement.

Sand casting may also be demonstrated for a few small basins.

Grundfos Solar Driven Pump

from Photovoltaic Panels
with a back up of generator power when needed.

Demonstrations of set up will be occurring for
a 500 foot deep well which is located at a
saddle point on a forty acre mountain top
location where the series is being filmed.

Water will be lifted an additional 500 foot of
rise via multiple water tanks and pumping
stations to a holding tank which will be
designed into the roof gardens of the 2
bedroom, 2 bath home, currently in design
phases, to allow on call, gravity feed water to
the home, garden, and outstructures on the
lands.

Design Notes for the Prototype Design Temple House

The following are Design Inspirations on the
Prototype Energy Efficient Design to be created on a forty
acre mountain top.

Style: Modern Temple

Maintainence Free Exteriors of colorized, striated cements,
adobes, frescos, sculptured with body molds like the Palace
of Fine Arts.

1450 square foot Interior.

Three or more times that amount in semi-sheltered,
glassed, screened, rainprotected exterior patio and lanai space.

Maximum Height allowed is 28 foot high ceilings in the great
open area/ library room - housing 10,000 books being
recycled from the Libraries - with cat walks for access to
books, and with double wide glassed arched doorways out to
patio rooftop sheltered rooms and walkabouts.

This space can be easily enclosed with a second floor at a
latter date, should additional footage be needed - so
doors.windows, skylights on the north, all in place for
that easy potential.

Minimum 8 foot wide, 4 feet deep, 40 foot long- rainwater
collection/fed/
lap pool with the western sunset side as
endless horizon design- non rectangular–filtered - gravity fed

Environmentally Correct - Rastra Block.

Rastra Block is a recycled cementitious foam block with open
cores that are stacked, grouted with concrete, and reinforced
with rebar, an Earth Friendly Concrete form system Which originated 30 years ago in Austria, made of a material called Thastryron, Thermal acoustic Styrofoam concrete.

It is 85% recycled post consumer polystyrene waste,
Styrofoam, which does not naturally recycle for more than
two million years.

This waste material, currently filling our dumps,
is being chopped and mixed with a cementitious binder to
create instead a rebar reinforced concrete wall construction
system that provides a 10 inch thick wall rated at R-25
insulation, compared to R-19 ratings of standard frame
construction with fiberglass insulation, with no offgassing.

The Thermal mass of concrete provides the insulation
advantage..

It minimizes the use of lumber, conserving resources and
money.

Energy efficient, fire, frost, insect, mold, hurricane and
tornado resistant, it boasts near perfect vapor diffusion, and
provides soundproofing.

The China Academy of Building Research in Bejing tested the
Rastra walls under dynamic loads to withstand 8 point
earthquakes without measurable or visable damage,

Rastra provides a permanent framework for a grid of
reinforced concrete that uses less concrete than other
insulating concrete forms and has been used around the
world in all climates.

Environmentally friendly, each element is air dried. No energy
is used for curing.
1 KwH produces one Rastra element, 10 inches thick by 15
inches high by 10 feet long.

During production no byproducts are freed and all debris is
recycled into new elements, or other products.

Elements can be cut, rasped, routed, or carved into stunning
sculpture-like forms using tools common for wood-working.
Nitches, Arches, insets of bottles, glass, and other creative
formings can be achieved.

Plaster adheres without preparations of wire mesh or lath.
Tiles can be set with thinset. Gypsum board can be glued

Originally invented by James Crowe and designed to be an
improvement on real slate roofing, the Authentic Roof
2000FR is Underwriters listed. The old world charm of slate
with more durability, without the extreme weight, and with
affordable installation costs, will be capping off the designs
for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath home which the Art Institute of San
Franciscos Green Architectural School and staff is
currently underway in designing.

Authentic Roofs are made from Baljemn TPO compounds, a
world first. Balgen is an alloy made of Polyethelene,
Polypropylene, and EPDM rubber, blended
homogenenously in a thermal reactor on a molecular level
without binding agents or plasticizers which are harmful to
the environment, molecularly DNA like stranded, not just a
bunch of stuff melted together.
This DNA like material cannot be separated once blended.
But to increase the ultra violet stability, flame rating, and
flex modulus can enhance its performance for other products such as roofing. Other alloys include brass, aluminum, and stainless steel.

Standard designed flashing materials can be used, with recommendation
for heavier gauge utilization, painted galvanized, zinc, or
copper.

The only product of its kind on the market made of TPO, with
UV package and anti-oxidants to protect it from the sun’s

Hail resistant, TPO is utilized by car manufacturers worldwide

Quietside Corporation is joining the series FROM the GROUND UP, bringing Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating Systems into the design process along with their QVM 9, an Energy Star approved Dual Purpose Hydronic Heat System for heating and DHW usage.

The QVM 9 unit is available in 3 capacities and has a 90% AFUE efficiency level.

It features sealed combustion and venting in Schedule 40 PVC or ABS.

Domestic Hot Water is provided on demand and will have priority over the heating demand until the call for DHW has completed.

The QSDHS system is available in 20, 50, and 80 gallon sizes, and consists of a tank, pump, and mixing valve.

This system is designed for use with the Quietside QVM9 DPHS and provides additional Domestic Hot Water production so that the unit can service Jacuzzi tubs and other high water usage devices, which require a greater flow rate than the QVM9 is capable of providing as a standalone device.

The tanks are manufactured from heavy gauge steel, and porcelain lined for a long life, and insulated with 2 inch non CFC blown foam with a powder coated sheet metal outer skin.
